Show and Tell Friday June 5th
by Lori Woodward Simons on 6/5/2009 6:05:39 AM

Today's the day we get to brag about our week's accomplishments. So what if you didn't get the full 20 hours in, the important thing is that you spent more time making your artwork than you would have otherwise.

So here is a great place to let everyone know how it went, what you did and how it felt to make strides with your art career. Even if you are just starting as an artist, it's important to put those hours in at practice - so don't hesitate to let everyone know how your week progressed.

Feel free to leave a comment. You'll have more room to type here than on Twitter.
Sincerely
Lori

Hi Lori,
Wow! Is it Friday already? :) Did not make 20 hours. Sigh. I found myself compensating (?) in an unusual way though. During the 15 hours I did get, I painted with a sense of almost urgency. A little 12 inch canvas resulted, and it bears none of the overworking that frequently shows up. A side benefit of the challenge?

Hi Lori, I wrote a comment above, but it seems to have disappeared into cyberspace. Sorry about that - looks pretty abrupt, doesn't it? ;-O At any rate, I put in somewhere between 10 and 12 hours this past week, which is up from last week's 8 hours. My outside job takes up the weekdays, so I have have found that this challenge is helping me to organize my time more efficiently so that I'm better able to squeeze more and more minutes out of a day for painting. What a great idea this was, and I thank you!! Without this pressure and accountability, I never would have gotten off my duff and done this. Next week will be even better. See you then! BBBBBBBB ;-)

I have been embarking on a similar program of working in the studio. But I find that setting a quota like 20 hours a week is too time focused for me -- I don't work well in that set up. So instead I am trying to commit to just making art every day: doing *some* work in the studio every day. Can be a lot, or every just a few minutes -- just making sure I keep that creative engine in my head turning over.

You can see my progress on Twitter by clicking on my link.

Hi all,

Remember, my original goal was 20 hours for myself - which obviously doesn't fit everyone's situation. Some have reported that they normally work 40 hours/week, but these artists are full time and often have spouses helping with administrative tasks.

Daniel... thanks for letting us know that the hour mark doesn't work as well for you... no problem with that! You're really doing the same thing.

BB: if you have an outside job - 10 to 12 hours is something to brag about! Great job.

Karen, if you got a nice little painting and were able to do it while being more relaxed, then that is indeed a milestone. I can't stand it when I feel distracted. Always paint better when I'm in the zone.

Gotta run and do off line stuff now. Will check in later. Thanks all for taking the time to post.

Lori

Hi Lori, lots of problems with our internet connection these days, remote area. I've already tried this twice, so third time being a charm...

Spent around 27 or so hours (so far) in studio, I just about live in here though so could be more. At any rate, great idea to make us all connect and be even more accountable, would you do this for my food intake as well, lol... c u soon. ps - will copy before previewing next time

Barbara,

27 hours! wow - I think you won the contest... there is no contest, but if there were, either you or K.Henderson would win. Anyway, that's wonderful.

Yeah, the food issue is somewhere down the road - related to the housework issue.

Thanks for checking in. You're an inspiration.

Well, my 15.25 hrs this week was an improvement over last week, I'm satisfied with that. The crazy thing is that I thought I was going to be golden last week and this, because the rest of my family is out of town. No one to make demands on my time, right? But that means the 5 animals in the house, and the acre or so of gardens had no one else to turn to, I couldn't call my husband to stop for milk on the way home, etc. Funny how much time one spends on such little things!

Anyway, this keeping track of my time may not get me to consistently put in 20 hrs, but at least it will show me where my time is spent, and what I can expect to accomplish in my studio time. It's a good thing.

Finished up the school year and still got 15 hours in this week. I posted a picture of my work from the week on my blog. Thanks again for the challenge.

I'm late posting in, but did get 26 hours in front of the easel this past week. None complete, tho', as all 3 that I'm working on are larger, more complex pieces for upcoming shows.

Jared, where did you get that image on your website that has the number of hours in the studio?

Pat, 26 hours? Definitely something to smile about.

PS next week, I'll be painting most every day - will post a new blog mid-week and on Friday. Yes, please feel free to comment.

Late post due to going out of town on Friday. Got 6 hours in with full time job. Grateful for that. This is helping me focus. Getting more time with the sketch book and research while commuting instead of sleeping.

Jim, 6 hours with a full time job? I can see why you're happy.

Great work everyone. I'm happily painting in Maine this week. Raining today, so will paint inside.
